It is reported that from 44,000 to 98,000 Americans die in hospitals each year as a result of medical errors, costing from $38 to 50 billion annually. In this 52nd UHMS Workshop, experts on the issue of patient safety in hyperbaric medicine, came together to exchange ideas and find workable solutions. More than ever, hyperbaric related incidents are being reported through the Hyperbaric Incident Monitoring Study (HIMS), a worldwide database which is one of the topics discussed in some detail. Other sessions include presentations on efficacy of screening procedures in preventing patient complications; ear barotrauma; and ensuring organzational safety in hyperbaric environments.
